SA woman jailed for identity theft

A woman has been jailed for at least 10 months for stealing her best friend's identity to obtain a fake driver's licence and a car loan in Adelaide.

Aldina Ederlina Fanning, 31, also interfered with the victim's mail and mobile phone account to cover her tracks in March and April last year, Judge Geoffrey Muecke told the South Australian District Court on Wednesday.

Fanning earlier pleaded guilty to one count of identity theft and one count of deceiving another to benefit herself.

Her lawyer asked for a suspended sentence, citing her remorse and repayment of the loan.

Fanning suffers from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and anxiety but that did not explain her offending, Judge Muecke said.

He sentenced Fanning to one year and four months in jail, with a non-parole period of 10 months.

The offending had left her friend "scared, traumatised and emotionally crippled", he said.

He also said Fanning's criminal history - including stealing, larceny and unlawful possession - meant she was at risk of reoffending.
