SA urged to look beyond wind power

South Australia must look beyond wind power as it transitions to a clean energy future, a new report has found.

Researchers at the University of Adelaide's Environment Institute say wind turbines currently supply a creditable 27 per cent of the state's energy needs.

But their report says there's still no answer to the variability of supply because of weather conditions.

"We need clean energy generators that are always available, can respond to changes in demand and provide essential network services," the report's lead author Ben Heard said.

"We need to think beyond wind and we need to do that now."
