SA trials new way to control algae

Authorities have begun trialling the use of hydrogen peroxide to control blue-green algae in Adelaide's Torrens Lake.

The trials follow two years of laboratory tests and are the first time the chemical has been used in such a way in Australia, although it has been used successfully in the US.

Natural Resources Adelaide spokesman Kym Good says flows of fresh water have previously been used to keep algal concentrations below the level that would require the lake to be closed.

But he says work has continued to find other, more effective, options.

The use of hydrogen peroxide will not be harmful to birds, fish or plants, Mr Good says.
