SA treasurer working on state growth

South Australian Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis says he's doing everything he can to stimulate economic growth, reduce taxes and keep cost of living pressures down.

As he finalises the July state budget, Mr Koutsantonis has warned that SA continues to face "serious headwinds", including the looming closure of car maker Holden in 2017 and its impact on the wider automotive sector.

He says 10,000 jobs have been created since the last state budget and while that is a good achievement, much more remains to be done to transition SA away from traditional to advanced manufacturing and to develop other industries.

"We've got to keep structurally reforming our economy. That means tax reform, that means stimulus, that means a whole suite of initiatives while also keeping in mind the cost of living," the treasurer told reporters on Friday.

"I am doing everything I can to stimulate growth, reduce taxes efficiently and, of course, keep cost of living pressures down.

"It's a balancing act. It's a very large jigsaw."

The treasurer's comments came as he announced an increase to the state's Emergency Services Levy of 1.5 per cent to help fund the emergency authorities including the Country Fire Service, police and the State Emergency Service.

The increase will be confirmed in the budget, which will be handed down on July 7.
