SA training organisation facing closure

A major South Australian training organisation says it may be forced to shut down because of a lack of support from the state government.

And it believes this could leave 400 workers at two soon-to-close Alinta Energy power stations, in SA's mid-north, with an even tougher task to find a new job.

Civil Train, the training arm of the Civil Contractors Federation (CFA), says it could help these workers but it too is under threat of closure following government changes to training subsidies.

A South Australian government program to subsidise private training groups recently ended and has not been renewed.

CFA chief executive Phil Sutherland has called on Employment Minister Gail Gago to "support redundant Alinta and other workers".

"Ensuring there is the regional capacity to re-train redundant workers for meaningful work is an investment government should make," Mr Sutherland said in a statement on Monday.

"Otherwise the unemployment queue will grow."

Last week Alinta brought forward the time line of the closure of its Port Augusta power stations and the Leigh Creek mine by 12 months to March 2017.

The closures will result in more than 400 jobs lost.
