South Australian child diagnosed with tetanus, the first case in a child in the state for 17 years

A 22-month-old South Australian toddler is in a stable condition in hospital with a confirmed case of tetanus.

The case is the first in a child in SA for 17 years and has prompted a call from health authorities for parents to ensure their children are fully vaccinated.

"Tetanus is an uncommon but very serious disease that can be fatal, particularly in infants and the elderly," chief medical officer Paddy Phillips said.
