SA to look at expanding city trams

The South Australian government will spend $4 million to develop a business case and hopefully attract federal funding for a major expansion of Adelaide's tram network.

The study will look at planning, design and project costs and also identify precise routes.

"Expanding our tram network has the potential to attract investment, boost economic growth and encourage urban renewal and jobs and bring residents and visitors to the city centre," Premier Jay Weatherill said.

Adelaide has just one tram line which runs from seaside Glenelg, through the centre of Adelaide and then north to the nearby Entertainment Centre.

The state government previously released plans for an ambitious expansion with tram lines to the eastern, northern and western suburbs, including a service to Adelaide Airport.

It would also like to build a city loop service.

Mr Weatherill said developing a business case for the expansion would allow the federal government to commit funds.

Earlier this week, Infrastructure Australia listed the new tram network for Adelaide as a priority project.
