SA Steel Summit for embattled industry

A Steel Summit will look at ways to boost South Australia's embattled manufacturing industry.

Steel manufacturers, construction companies, architects, contractors and fabricators will later this month discuss ways to give the industry an edge against lower-quality imports through the government's Steel Taskforce, Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis says.

The summit will also flesh out the terms of a policy mandating that all state government construction uses only Australia-standard steel.

"South Australia is the birthplace of the Australian steel industry, but in the 21st century our steelmakers and fabricators face some major challenges," Mr Koutsantonis said ahead of the February 16 conference.
