South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill has backed calls to raise the GST to 15 per cent to cover increasing public healthcare costs.

"We do have to talk about it. This massive cut to health funding has to be filled in some way," he told 891 ABC Adelaide on Monday morning.

NSW Premier Mike Baird is among those to propose an increase in the GST from 10 per cent to 15 per cent.

South Australian Opposition leader Steven Marshall said GST should "absolutely not" be raised.

"We have the highest taxes in the nation here in South Australia," he told reporters.

"We have the highest unemployment rate in the nation and, as Liberals, we don't believe that increasing taxes is going to help us create any new jobs."
