Police will conduct a major operation to detect illicit drugs at the Spin Off Festival in Adelaide.

The festival is expected to attract a sell-out crowd of 20,000 to the Adelaide showgrounds on Friday.

Superintendent Craig Wall has urged all those attending to be mindful of their personal safety and to make sensible choices.

Supported by the dog squad, officers will conduct an illicit drug detection operation throughout the event.

"You will be refused entry, or evicted, if you're found in possession of illegal substances at Spin Off," Superintendent Wall said.

"There's no way of knowing what's in a pill, or what adverse reactions an illicit substance might cause from one person to the next.

"Don't gamble with your health, or risk a conviction, to line the pockets of criminals with no regard for your safety or enjoyment."

Superintendent Wall said those people drinking at the festival were also asked to set sensible limits.
