Hundreds of serving South Australian policewomen have marched through Adelaide to mark 100 years since the first female officers were appointed.

In 1915 SA got its first policewomen, providing them with the same pay and hours as their male counterparts.

They were the first women officers commissioned in the then British Empire and among the first in the world.

Tuesday's march stopped traffic along King William as officers made their way from police headquarters to Government House.
