Detectives are investigating the unexplained death of a man in Adelaide's northern suburbs.

Police believe 81-year-old Robert Whitwell, whose body was found at his Craigmore home on August 8, died of natural causes but say there are "a number of factors" which cannot be explained.

"At this time his death is being treated as unexplained, and we are asking for anyone who knows Mr Whitwell to come forward and speak with police," Detective Chief Inspector Shane Addison said on Tuesday.

"We are keen to talk to anyone who knows him, is a friend or has seen him recently as investigators are keen to establish his recent movements.

"Police will also conduct further investigations into this unexplained death to determine the circumstances behind it."

Mr Addison said Mr Whitwell had been seen by neighbours on August 4 and had been in contact with family the following morning.

A post-mortem has been conducted and investigators have examined Mr Whitwell's home, whose death has not yet been declared a major crime.
