SA police happy with Easter drivers

South Australian police have praised drivers for their behaviour during the Easter break but say the one death recorded is one too many.

A two-year-old girl died on Friday when the ute in which she was a passenger rolled at Point Turton on Yorke Peninsula.

Superintendent Bob Fauser said the girl's death came in "horrific" circumstances, with her capsule absorbing the full force of the crash.

"One fatal crash is just one too many. The death of a child is a terrible thing," he said on Monday.

But Supt Fauser said overall the motorists' behaviour contributed to a generally safe weekend.

"Given the difficult weather conditions across much of the state on Monday plus the high volumes of traffic, people must have behaved very, very well in order to get home safely, as they did," he said.

Police tested more than 20,000 drivers for alcohol and drug use over Easter.

Ninety-five were charged with drink-driving offences and 100 returned positive drug tests.
