SA pledges to help Riverland farmers

The South Australian government has promised to stand with Riverland farmers hit by a freak storm.

The storm and the hail it brought caused significant damage to fruit and other crops on Friday with the losses likely to run to many millions of dollars.

Premier Jay Weatherill says the damage will also cut the number of seasonal jobs on offer, which will also impact on the region.

"We're still attempting to understand the nature and extent of the damage that has occurred," Mr Weatherill said on Monday.

"But we stand ready to assist the people of the Riverland."

Agriculture Minister Leon Bignell visited the Riverland on Sunday and Regional Development Minister Geoff Brock was in the area on Monday to continue the talks with affected groups.

The storm also impacted parts of Adelaide's eastern suburbs when it hit on Friday afternoon causing damage to homes and cars.

Locals reported golf ball-sized hail while some areas were hit by heavy rain and strong winds.
