SA parliament to consider jumps racing ban

A parliamentary committee will examine the future of jumps racing in South Australia.

Amid growing calls for a ban, Racing Minister Leon Bignell says the committee will examine the safety of horses and riders, the economic impact and the views of the racing industry, animal welfare groups and the wider community.

SA and Victoria are the only states where jumps racing is still allowed.

Mr Bignell says Thoroughbred Racing SA believes the sport is an integral part of the racing industry and a significant contributor in terms of employment and economic benefits.

"However, the government is aware there is growing unease within our community," the minister said on Tuesday.

The RSPCA has campaigned for an end to jumps racing for the past 30 years while the Greens have already introduced a bill to parliament to enforce a ban.

"But what we really need first is to have a discussion with the entire state to find out whether that's what most people want," Mr Bignell said.
