SA needs motorcycle licence reform: study

South Australian teenagers could be banned from riding motorcycles until they're 18 in an effort to slash the state's sky-rocketing road toll.

The state government will consider raising the minimum age for a learner's motorcycle permit from 16 to 18 in a proposal forwarded by the Centre for Automotive Safety Research.

"We are looking at all options to reduce motorcyclist road trauma and the risk of crashes among novice drivers," Road Safety Minister Chris Picton said.

Last year 24 motorcyclists died on the state's roads up from eight in 2016.

Other proposed changed include banning learners from carrying pillion passengers and requiring licences for people wanting to ride mopeds.

"Motorcycle riders are vulnerable road users and all too often we see rider error or reckless riding to blame for serious or fatal crashes," Mr Picton said.

The proposals will now be subjected to a two week public consultation period.
