South Australian metal band detained in Malaysia

Consular assistance is being provided to an Australian metalcore band detained in Malaysia.

Guitarist Jona Weinhofen says Adelaide band I Killed The Prom Queen, which is touring southeast Asia, could be held in immigration detention for up to two weeks because it doesn't have a permit to perform.

After being detained, Weinhofen revealed their promoter had failed to get the correct visas and the best the band could hope for was being deported.

But things soon got worse.

"Apparently we're going to be detained for four to 14 days in a Malaysian immigration detention centre," Weinhofen tweeted yesterday morning.

"Weirdest part is some of the immigration officers asked us to autograph stuff and one is wearing a prom queen shirt. Still locking us up tho [sic].

"At least we have food and water and we are in good health. Things could definitely be worse and our situation pales to other recent events."

DFAT said it was providing band members with assistance and had been in contact with their families in Australia.
