SA marks one year since Pinery fire

Lives lost in South Australia's Pinery bushfire will be remembered on the first anniversary of the deadly blaze.

The fire killed two people and injured 90 others as it raged across 82,000 hectares of farmland north of Adelaide between November 25 and December 1 last year.

About 72,000 livestock were lost in the flames which also destroyed 500 buildings, including 91 houses, with a total damage bill of more than $75 million.

Emergency Services Minister Peter Malinauskas says Friday will be a sad day as those killed are remembered but he insists people must also be ready for what lies ahead.

"It is a reality of life in South Australia that we will encounter bushfires," he said.

"It's up to all of us to have a plan in place, ready to respond when they do occur."

The Country Fire Service said there was no doubt that devastating bushfires would happen over the coming season.

"Because we've had a cooler winter and little bit more rain, that's certainly not going to mean that those events won't happen," CFS spokesman Daniel Hamilton said.

"There's still going to be the danger to the community and we're still at risk of seeing a devastating fire.

"Certainly it may be a little bit delayed this year but there is no room for complacency."
