SA man pleads not guilty to murder

An Adelaide man charged over the killing of his neighbour a year ago has pleaded not guilty to murder.

Steven Patrick Berg 34, appeared in the Supreme Court on Monday where a second psychiatric report was ordered amid questions of his mental competence at the time of the offence.

Berg has denied killing Deon Hewitt, 74, who was assaulted at his Flinders Park home.

His not guilty plea prompted tears from some people in the public gallery.

The case will return to court on August 5.
