A driver has died in South Australia after doing a burnout in front of police, speeding off and crashing into a tree.

The man's Commodore sedan was spotted on Williss Drive at Normanville on the Fleurieu Peninsula on Monday afternoon.

Checks revealed the car was unregistered and patrol officers activated their lights but the driver didn't stop and was chased to a nearby road where he performed a burnout.
