SA man charged with terror offences

The identity of a South Australian man accused of terrorism-related offences has been suppressed after a court was told he has mental health issues.

The man has been charged with four counts of advocating terrorism over allegations he posted videos to social media that encouraged people in overseas conflict zones to commit terrorist acts.

The 50-year-old, who was already in custody in Adelaide's Yatala jail, was charged on Thursday after authorities received information though the National Security Hotline.

His case later came before the Adelaide Magistrates Court through a phone hook-up and the court was told he had psychiatric issues, prompting magistrate Jayanthi McGrath to order a report into his mental health.

She also suppressed his name and image in the interests of the proper administration of justice.

A commonwealth prosecutor said the charges related to videos the man had allegedly posted on social media between July and November 2015, the ABC reported.

In each video, the defendant was depicted providing verbal instructions as well as physical demonstrations on how to kill Jewish people, the prosecutor said.

The man's case will return to court on February 7.
