A man will be asked to pay back more than $700 to an Adelaide petrol station after he allegedly drove off repeatedly without paying.

The 33-year-old was charged with driving off from the same Smithfield petrol station without paying nine times between June 2014 and April 2015, police say.

The man was discovered with a second set of number plates, which were used in the thefts, inside his car after being pulled over by police in Adelaide's northern suburbs early on Wednesday morning.

He was bailed to appear in Elizabeth Magistrates Court on November 12 charged with nine counts of making off without payment, and driving while disqualified and without a licence.
