SA Labor to offer renewable energy loans

The South Australian Labor government has pledged $100 million in loans for householders to buy solar panels or home batteries if it is re-elected in March.

Homeowners will be able to apply for loans of up to $10,000, with no interest charged for the first seven years, to purchase the systems, Premier Jay Weatherill said on Thursday.

"More renewable energy means cheaper power for all South Australians," Mr Weatherill said.

Energy Minister Tom Koutsantonis says the scheme will lower prices because it will reduce peak demand on the grid.

The scheme will also help the state reach Labor's previously announced election pledge of sourcing 75 per cent of its energy from renewables by 2025.

South Australians head to the polls on March 17.
