SA home to growing number of retirees

PEOPLE

There were 1,596,572 South Australians, 50.7 per cent female and 49.3 per cent male.

The average age was 39. The state has one of Australia's oldest populations with 16 per cent of people aged 65 or older.

ANCESTRY

Most people had been born in Australia (73.3 per cent), with English the most prominent ancestry (29.3 per cent). Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people made up 1.9 per cent of people (30,4331).

The majority of South Australians said they had no religion (28.1 per cent), but the leading faith was Catholicism (19.9 per cent).

RELATIONSHIPS

Nearly half of adults were married (48.7 per cent), while 9.6 per cent were in a de facto relationship and 12 per cent were either divorced or separated.

WHERE THEY LIVE

There were 727,676 private dwellings in South Australia. Of these, 79.9 per cent were houses and 8.9 per cent were flats or units.

EDUCATION

Nearly a third (28.7 per cent) of South Australians were being educated.

JOBS

There were 784,328 employed people and the unemployment rate was 5.7.

Education was the dominant industry, taking in 4.6 per cent of workers, followed by food services (3.9 per cent) and hospitals (3.9 per cent).
