SA hit by blackout and storms

* An intense low-pressure system packing winds of 140km/h has lashed Adelaide and parts of South Australia, causing widespread damage, coastal inundation and flooding.

* The destructive storm came 24 hours after supercell thunderstorms knocked out the state's entire power network, ripping up transmission towers.

* 30,000 properties remained without power on Thursday night, some from the blackout and some because of new storm damage.

* The SES says it has responded to more than 1000 calls for help during the past 36 hours.

* With more than 54mm of rain in some areas on Thursday, the weather bureau has warned as much again could fall across parts of the Adelaide Hills and the mid-north before the storm moves east.

* Flood warnings remain in place for several areas along with a severe weather warning covering large parts of SA.

* The blackout and storms are expected to cost SA millions of dollars with major companies including BHP Billiton and Arrium forced to suspend operations.
