SA govt plans bikie crackdown

South Australia's parliament will be able to declare bikie gangs to be criminal organisations under proposed new laws.

Attorney-General John Rau says the changes will help police crack down on outlaw motorcycle gangs because the existing courts process is time-consuming and onerous.

The laws would make it an offence for bikies to recruit new members, enter a licensed venue wearing gang colours and fail to leave a venue when required.

The government would also have the right to ban gang members from specific places and events.

"Our community has the right to feel safe," Mr Rau said on Tuesday.

"We will not tolerate behaviour from criminals who seek to disrupt our community."

Opposition spokesman Vickie Chapman said it was concerning that the government wanted to shift powers from the judiciary to the parliament.

"It would be very unusual to ask the parliament to be the arbiter of the interpretation of the laws. That's why we have a separation of powers," she told reporters.
