South Australia's first female chief magistrate Elizabeth Bolton will resign in October due to illness.

Attorney-General John Rau said he felt privileged to have worked with Judge Bolton, who's been in the job for eight years.

"She will leave big shoes to be filled. I consider it a privilege to have worked with her and always appreciated her advice," he said in a statement on Thursday.
