Children playing with matches have started a fire that caused an estimated $100,000 of damage to a house in Port Pirie West in South Australia.

Firefighters were called just before 3pm (CST) on Monday to find the home well alight but the family living there had all escaped unharmed.

The fire was contained to a bedroom, bathroom and hallway but caused an estimated $100,000 damage to the $200,000 home.

Fire investigators determined that the fire was caused by children playing with matches in a bedroom.

A Metropolitan Fire Service spokeswoman said the fire was a reminder that parents should keep matches and lighters well out of reach of children.
