SA family escape from burning home

A pregnant woman has been taken to hospital after she extinguished a fire in her Adelaide home and shepherded her five children to safety.

The woman awoke to smoke in her Elizabeth North home on Tuesday morning and extinguished a burning power board and heater before escaping with her five young children, fire crews say.

MFS fire cause investigator Rod Kersten said the house did not have a working smoke alarm and that the young family was lucky to be alive.

"They could have all perished quite easily, just died in their sleep, from carbon monoxide poisoning," he told AAP.

Two children were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene and the woman was hospitalised as a precaution.

Mr Kersten said a malfunctioning power board caused the blaze, making it the second electrical fault to spark a house fire in 24 hours.

A teenage boy was hospitalised for smoke inhalation after overloaded power boards destroyed the bedroom of an Athelstone home on Monday night.
