SA Davenport by-election set for Jan 31

Voters in the Adelaide Hills seat of Davenport will go to the polls on January 31 for a by-election sparked by the retirement of long-serving Liberal Iain Evans.

It will follow a by-election in the neighbouring seat of Fisher on December 6, prompted by the death of independent MP Bob Such.

Dr Such died in October after being diagnosed in March with a brain tumour.

Speaker Michael Atkinson announced the Davenport by-election date in parliament on Thursday.

The Labor speaker ruled out holding the polls on the same day, saying it was an inherently political decision because one by-election was sparked by a death, and the other was sparked by a resignation.

Sam Duluk will be the Liberal candidate for Davenport, while Labor is yet to announce its candidate.

The seat has been in Liberal hands since its creation in 1970.

Anti-violence campaigner Nat Cook will represent Labor in the seat of Fisher against Liberal staffer Heidi Harris.
