A South Australian cat shelter has lost its charity licence after donations were allegedly used for gambling.

Help Save The Furry Ones has been stripped of its charity status after a tip-off donations to the shelter were allegedly being transferred to a company linked with online gambling, says Liquor and Gambling Commissioner Dini Soulio.

"I would warn South Australians not to donate to this organisation," he said in a statement.

The organisation, which is based in Adelaide, denied the allegations and posted on Facebook that it was co-operating with an Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission investigation to clear its name.
