SA CFS volunteers protest changes

Hundreds of Country Fire Service volunteers have protested against a proposed restructure of the management of South Australia's emergency services.

The state government wants to merge the CFS, the Metropolitan Fire Service and State Emergency Service, to be headed by one commissioner to reduce duplication.

An advertisement for the new position of Emergency Services Commissioner ran in The Advertiser on Saturday.

The protesters chanted "Don't Mess with the CFS" outside Parliament House in Adelaide on Wednesday.

Opposition emergency services spokesperson Duncan McFetridge said minister Tony Piccolo had bungled the consultation process relating to the amalgamation of the emergency services.

"Emergency Services volunteers have been politely warning minister Piccolo for months that his plans to restructure the CFS, SES and MFS is a recipe for disaster."

The minister needed to suspend the recruitment of the single commissioner and resume negotiations, he said.

Greens emergency services spokesperson Tammy Franks also called on the government to halt its misguided reform process.
