Rapist gets prison term cut

A rapist jailed more than 20 years after attacking a 19-year-old woman in her Adelaide home has had two years cut from his jail sentence.

John William Knight was arrested in Queensland in 2013 after checks against a DNA database linked him to the 1991 cold case.

He later pleaded guilty to two counts of rape and one of burglary and was jailed for at least eight years and six months.

But the Court of Criminal Appeal on Tuesday cut his non-parole period to six years and six months.

In his reasons, Chief Justice Chris Kourakis said the evidence did not establish that Knight broke into the woman's home with the intention of raping her, describing the attack as opportunistic.

He said there was also no evidence of further offending of a similar kind by Knight in the two decades since the original crimes and he criticised the sentencing judge for not having proper regard to the report from a forensic psychologist before imposing Knight's jail term.
