Golf ball-sized hail, heavy rain and thunderstorms have lashed South Australia just as peak hour hit.

A severe weather warning is in place for Adelaide, Whyalla, Renmark, Mount Gambier, Leigh Creek and Moomba with conditions starting to sour about 4pm on Friday.

Kingscote near Kangaroo Island recorded 25mm of rain in 30 minutes, the Bureau of Meteorology said while winds up to 90km/h were predicted in the afternoon.
