Officers responded immediately, but when they went to confront the armed man, a police officer was stabbed in the neck, and the 27-year-old suspect was shot in the leg by police.

Both were rushed to hospital for treatment for their injuries, with the suspect in police custody while receiving medical care.

The injuries to both the police officer and her alleged attacker are not considered life-threatening.

Addressing the media on Wednesday afternoon, Superintendent David O’Donovan said the alleged assailant will be charged over the incident.

“I can assure you that we will be putting to the court all of the circumstances as they occurred,” he said.

“He will be facing some very serious charges ... I’ll leave that to your imagination. He has stabbed a police officer.”

He said the 27-year-old man, from Woodville Gardens, was not known to police.

O’Donovan praised the officers involved, saying they responded to what was “clearly an evolving and very rapidly dangerous situation”.

“There is no police officer who comes to work looks forward to being assaulted ... it is a harsh reality of the work that we do that we are often confronted with these situations,” he said.

Police said there is no ongoing threat to the community.
