Police kill South Australian man in shootout

Police in South Australia have shot a man dead after a shootout in the Elwomple area, near Tailem Bend south east of Adelaide.

The 50-year-old man refused to cooperate with police after they arrived at his house on Elwomple Road around 7pm last night.

Despite the efforts of the STAR Group and negotiators, the man shot at police over the course of several hours.

Just before midnight police returned fire, fatally wounding the man.

Officers attempted to revive the man but he died at the scene.

Investigators will analyse the scene and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
