The number of women working on creating a major new South Australian motorway is nearly double the national average for such projects.

The state government says more than 21 per cent of jobs linked with the Northern Connector Project are held by women, compared with the average of 11.7 per cent for the construction industry.

The $985 million road being built largely by Lendlease is expected to create 480 jobs a year until it is completed in late 2019.
