Protesters march on SA mine site

About 150 anti-nuclear activists have marched on the Olympic Dam Uranium mine as part of a three-day protest in South Australia's north.

The demonstrators are camping near the mine site in a peaceful action that will stretch until Sunday.

On Friday they marched from their camp site to the mine dressed as zombies to highlight the role of uranium in the nuclear fuel cycle.

After negotiations between the group and mine operators BHP Billiton, the road to and from the site was closed for the march which police described as orderly.

"Everyone has a right to protest in a lawful manner and we were pleased with today's events," commander Bronwyn Killmier said.

Organisers said the non-violent action at Olympic Dam would also voice objections to plans by the federal government to set up a low-level nuclear waste dump in South Australia and the proposal under consideration for SA to establish a high-level dump to take waste from overseas.
