South Australia's Royal Commission into nuclear energy will hold its first public hearings in Mt Gambier.

Monday's gathering will be followed by a series of other public forums which will take the commission to Port Augusta, Berri and the APY indigenous lands in the state's north.

The inquiry is looking at whether or not South Australia should expand its involvement in the nuclear industry.
