South Australia's royal commission into nuclear energy has completed a series of overseas inspections of nuclear facilities and processing plants.

The commission visited Taiwan, Japan, Finland, Austria, France and the United Kingdom meeting with more than 150 representatives from 40 international organisations.

Commissioner Kevin Scarce inspected facilities involved in the processing and manufacture of nuclear material, research reactors, nuclear power plants under construction and waste disposal facilities.

"These visits proved to be very informative and assisted the commission's understanding of the challenges, successes and lessons learnt by countries active in the nuclear fuel cycle," the commission said in statement.

"The series of visits also increased the commission's understanding of current technology and advancements in nuclear energy and highlighted both good and bad practices within the nuclear industry."

Mr Scarce is investigating what future role South Australia should have in the nuclear cycle including whether it should become involved in processing uranium, nuclear power generation and waste disposal.
