Northern Territory police are set to get body-mounted cameras to improve the safety and effectiveness of frontline officers.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Kate Vanderlaan says the roll-out of 820 cameras to police in Darwin, Alice Springs, Tennant Creek and Catherine has begun.

"It is anticipated that using the technology as an additional method of capturing evidence will see officers spending less time writing statements and completing paperwork at the station, and more time out patrolling and responding to incidents in our community," Ms Vanderlaan said on Thursday.
