THE STRUCTURE OF THE NOMADS BIKIE GANG:

* OPERATION: Similar to a paramilitary organisation with a strong hierarchy.

* THE PRESIDENT: Has unlimited power and discretion. Has the last say in all matters.

* SERGEANT AT ARMS: Responsible for enforcing internal discipline, including sometimes inflicting violent punishments.

* MEMBERSHIP: Includes other office bearers, such as secretaries and treasurers, ordinary members, nominees and associates.

* DRESS CODE: Normally consists of a sleeveless denim or leather riding jacket featuring club patches. Held as sacred by club members and only available to full members. Associates allowed to wear "soft colours" featuring words or other information that indicate their connection to a particular gang.

* FORMER MEMBERS: Must return all clothing and other items bearing the club's name or patch. All tattoos making reference to the club must be covered or removed.

* CODE OF SILENCE: No discussion of club business with anyone who is not a full member.

* BEHAVIOUR: All members to be required to act in a manner that is perceived as strong. Actions such as seeking protection while in jail are particularly frowned upon.

* REPUTATION: Often referred to as "one percenters". The term harks back to a gathering of 4000 bikers at Hollister in California in 1947 when clashes with police resulted in about 50 arrests. It prompted the American Motorcyclist Association to state that "99 per cent of motorcyclists are good, decent, law-abiding citizens".
