New SA bikie laws to come into force soon

New laws to crack down on bikie gangs in South Australia are just days away from coming into force.

Under the legislation, 10 gangs - the Mongols, Finks, Gypsy Jokers, Rebels, Hells Angels, Comancheros, Descendants, Bandidos, Nomads and Red Devils - will be declared criminal organisations.

Police say the 10 groups currently present a risk to public safety.

The new laws passed state parliament on Thursday and could be in force by the middle of next week.

They allow police to crack down on bikie activities, preventing gang members from displaying colours or patches and from gathering together.

The provisions were drafted after the High Court struck down previous attempts in SA to act against bikie and other gangs.

Attorney-General John Rau said the gangs to be outlawed had a blatant disregard for community safety.

"Police have told us they need these laws in order to better protect the community, and thanks to the passing of this legislation they will now have a range of new tools they can use to combat the illegal activity of these gangs," he said.
