New live-baiting laws for SA

The South Australian government is to strengthen laws to try to combat live-baiting in the greyhound industry.

New offences will be created for taking part in live-baiting, mirroring current offences for organised animal fights such as cock and dog fighting.

The maximum penalties will be increased for breaching those laws, with fines rising from $20,000 to $50,000 and jail terms from two to four years.

Environment Minister Ian Hunter and Racing Minister Leon Bignell announced the changes on Monday, after teaming with the RSPCA and Greyhound Racing SA (GRSA).

The moves follow shocking footage shown of live-baiting on the ABC's Four Corners last month.

"Live-baiting is already illegal but the associated activities, such as supplying the animals to be the bait, providing the venue, or being present at one of these training sessions are not," Mr Hunter said.

The RSPCA and GRSA also plan new measures including using more animal welfare and compliance staff, increasing the inspection rate of premises and using aerial drone surveillance.
