New interconnector could help SA: report

Four options for a new interconnector between South Australia and another state are being considered, SA's electricity transmission network owner says.

ElectraNet has revealed the options in a new report that explores how SA can transform its power system to make it more secure and cheaper.

The interconnector options include two that would link SA to NSW, one connecting to Victoria and another linking SA to Queensland.

But ElectraNet is also investigating new non-network options, such as large-scale power storage devices or local wind generation, the report says.

"South Australia needs a long-term solution that will facilitate our energy transformation, while improving system security and placing downward pressure on electricity prices," chief executive Steve Masters said on Monday.

The report marks the start of a process that will test the costs and benefits of a project, like an interconnector, to improve SA's power system.

The testing, necessary for any major network investment in the National Electricity Market, is expected to last around a year and the project would need to be given the green light by the Australian Energy Regulator.

It comes after damaging storms in September brought down major transmission lines in SA's mid-north, overloading the state's main interconnector with Victoria and causing a statewide blackout.

Last month state energy minister Tom Koutsantonis revealed SA would talk with NSW on interconnecting power between the states.
