A pile of unexplained human bones have been found at a South Australian cemetery, sparking a police investigation.

The anonymous remains were found at the Ardrossan Cemetery at Maitland on Yorke Peninsula yesterday in an area police don’t believe had been previously used.

The remains do not belong to a child and at this stage no gender has been determined.

Police believe the bones have been there a long time, and while they are not considered overly suspicious, they will be investigated.

Forensic police and SES volunteers are searching the cemetery for further clues.
