Mum asks to be spared jail after SA crash

A South Australian woman who admitted she killed her son while driving dangerously has asked a judge to spare her jail time.

Nadia Khan was tired and under the influence of cannabis when her car rolled at Mount Eba, in the state's Far North, in January last year.

Paramedics found her one-year-old son dead at the scene, while Khan was also injured in the crash.

The District Court on Tuesday heard she was driving to the APY Lands to visit family and intended to sleep at Port Augusta, but smoked cannabis and continued with her journey.

She and her son slept in the car for a short time before the crash, then stopped for food and petrol in the lead-up.

Defence counsel Michael Lutt said Khan was distraught after the incident and deeply regrets her actions.

"She never intended what occurred to happen," he said.

He asked Judge Paul Slattery to consider handing her a home detention or suspended sentence, but prosecutor James Slocombe said the case was serious and Khan should serve time behind bars.

He said the car swerved onto the wrong side of the road, hit gravel and then rotated 20 times.

"This was a journey that ... was extremely dangerous," he said.

Judge Slattery ordered a home detention inquiry report and continued Khan's bail ahead of a sentencing date in February.

She has pleaded guilty to one aggravated count of causing death by dangerous driving.
