Mistrial declared in SA murder case

A mistrial has been declared in the case of a man charged with the murder of his mother in Adelaide.

The South Australian Supreme Court on Tuesday granted a request from counsel for a mistrial in the case of Wei Li, 22, who had pleaded not guilty to murdering his mother Emma Tien in March 2011.

The case has been listed for a fresh trial from September 7.

Ms Tien was found beaten, strangled and wrapped in white bed sheets at her Adelaide home.

After her death Li, then 18, fled to Melbourne, where he checked into a hotel but never checked out, leaving behind his luggage, computer and clothing.

He then flew to Singapore and on to China, where he remained for more than three years until he was deported back to Australia in July 2014.
