A truck driver has been fined after allegedly failing to give way to a heritage train on South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula.

The heritage Cockle Train train collided with a truck at a level crossing south of Adelaide near Petersen Road at Middleton about 10.20am.

The train was carrying 15 passengers at the time and was partially derailed on impact, the Country Fire Service said.

The truck, which was transporting soil, overturned after the collision, causing a combination of diesel fuel and hydraulic fluid to leak out onto the road.

Some passengers including a child were taken to the local South Coast District Hospital for treatment to minor injuries.

A volunteer at the SteamRanger Heritage Railway, which runs the Cockle Train, said he was surprised someone didn't get seriously hurt.

"We really had no chance but as we approached the crossing it all seemed clear, but this truck came out of nowhere and we've collided with it," Kennelly said.
