Mental health issues in murder case

A man charged with the stabbing murder of his mother has a history of mental health issues, a court has heard.

The 42-year-old was previously diagnosed with schizophrenia and has been admitted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, defence counsel Carrie Demertzis told the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday.

"He really is quite unwell," Ms Demertzis said.

The man has been charged with the murder of his 63-year-old mother at suburban Kensington Park on Wednesday night.

Paramedics found the woman outside a home suffering from multiple stab wounds.

She died at the scene.

Both her identity and the identity of her son were suppressed while police conduct an identification parade for two civilian witnesses.

The man's case will return to court on June 7.

Until then he will be detained under a mental health order.
